Regionals 2010

On July 9-11 2010, BFC travelled to Burlington Ontario for the Ontario Mixed Ultimate Championships.  With six bids to the Canadian Ultimate Championships on the line and only nine teams entered in the tournament, the tournament format was an interesting 8-game two-day round robin.  BFC opened the weekend against the #1 seeded Monster, a close game that featured some unforced turnovers by both sides and plenty of lead changes.  With BFC up by a point at hard cap, Monster scored a key point to knot the game at 8’s and take it to universe.  BFC dug deep and showed its toughness, scoring the last point for a huge 9-8 universe point victory and a great start to the weekend.  The second game of the day was against Tundra, whose fast-paced hucking game seemed to shake BFC from its more steady, patient style of play.  Never able to get firm control of the game, BFC was down by two at the horn and scored the final point in a tough 11-10 loss.  BFC’s third game was a straightforward 15-0 win against the spirited Druid from London.  The last game of the day was against a strong Mayhem team who was already off to a 3-0 start to the tournament.  The game started chippy and stayed chippy, with plenty of calls and discussion both ways.  Mayhem soon pulled ahead and was up 7-2 approaching soft cap.  BFC’s confidence was shaken but the team showed incredible strength to score five straight to tie it at 7’s, before Mayhem finally got one more to take half 8-7.  The horn for hard cap went during halftime, and with the game on the line BFC’s O-line received the second half pull and scored to take the game to universe point.  On the last point of the day Mayhem scored, handing BFC a tough 9-8 universe point loss.  A delicious buffet dinner at Tucker’s Marketplace helped soften the blow and recharge the batteries after a long Saturday.  On Sunday BFC opened with a 14-7 win over Zen, setting up the second match of the day against Big Hammers.  Unable to stop Big Country’s hucks for scores, BFC dropped a tough 10-6 loss heading into its bye.  Some time in the shade and some delicious bagels helped set up the third match of the day against an athletic young MuD team from Guelph.  Opening with a break to go up 2-0 wasn’t enough, as MuD stormed back to even the score.  The teams traded points until Mother Nature stormed herself, unleashing a spectacular thunderstorm that stopped the game at 5-5, with MuD threatening to score against BFC’s O-line near the BFC endzone.  After a half hour break in the cars to wait out the storm, the O-line took to the field to restart the point, defending its own endzone with a furious 1-6 zone D that surprised MuD into a turnover.  With the O-line back on the right side of the disc BFC took control of the game, taking the score to 6-5 and starting a commanding three point run that sealed the game for BFC, a solid 10-7 win in the end.  With a spot to Sherbrooke locked up, much discussion ensued with the TD about whether BFC’s last scheduled game against BigFish was necessary.  The ruling was that the game had to be played, so the two teams put friendship aside and took to the field to battle out one last game for the weekend.  BFC’s strength was too much for the Fish, who battled hard and showed a lot of spirit in an 11-2 win for BigFish Fan Club.  All in all, a 5-3 record for the weekend, with two really close one-point losses and some really sweet hard-fought wins over Monster and MuD, gave BFC a boost for the long drive back to Ottawa and some big anticipation for the rest of the summer and the Canadian Ultimate Championships.

Northern Flights 2010

On June 18-20 2010, BFC travelled to North Bay Ontario for the annual Northern Flights tournament.  With hopes of a high finish in the tournament and dreams of a milkshake at the Laurentian Dairy Bar on the drive home in mind, BFC started the weekend off right, opening Saturday with a smooth 13-0 win over the spirited Slag from Sudbury.  BFC’s next matchup of the day was Snakeface, a who’s who roster of current and former Ottawa competitive players.  There was plenty of good-natured trash talk and rivalry leading up to this game and it proved to be a highly spirited match, but despite some savvy play from the Snakeface vets BFC easily won 13-4.  (Not to be outdone, Snakeface owned BFC in the post-game beachball dodgeball spirit game).  BFC’s third opponent of the day were the Muskies, a hometown North Bay team featuring some outstanding athletes.  The result of this matchup of the 1 and 2 seeds of the pool would determine BFC’s crossover opponent for the last match of the day.  In the end, the Muskies’ behind-the-backs killed BFC with a tough 10-8 loss at hard cap.  BFC’s final match of the day was against Monster.  After a quick 4-1 start by BFC, Monster called a timeout to regroup and quickly got themselves back in the game.  The game ebbed and flowed from there with neither side able to pull ahead, but eventually BFC ran out of time; with Monster up by one at hard cap they scored the final point to take a close 11-9 win.  A 2-2 Saturday was capped off by a delicious East Side Mario’s buffet dinner at the field, and then BFC turned back the clock and donned their 70’s attire for the infamous North Bay party that no one really remembers, but was really fun.  Sunday dawned cool and rainy, and BFC’s Saturday result meant a rematch against the Muskies in the quarters.  The Muskies set the tone with their first point a behind-the-backer, which proved to be the theme of the game as BFC dropped a disappointing 15-11 decision.  Next up was Tundra, a longtime BFC foe.  In a fast-paced game with many lead changes, the game was knotted at 9-9 when soft cap sounded.  Tundra scored the next point to go up 10-9, but BFC showed its mental toughness and brought it home with two straight points and a universe point victory, setting up a trip to the 5-6 game against Mayhem.  With large portions of both teams’ rosters shut down at the end of the weekend, Mayhem scraped out an ugly 9-5 win.  A very good 6th place finish for BFC with some close, hard-fought losses and some equally strong wins, capped off by a bunch of delicious Laurentian Dairy Bar milkshakes for everyone.

Gender Blender 2010 : A review!

How do you have a great time at Gender Blender?  Three things.  Great drinks.  Great people.  Great games.  And how can it get better than CoEd Naked Twister?  That’s right, Twister!  BFC and Big Fish set out to make the greatest living room game ever in having a huge twister board for the Friday Party.  Needless to say, the party was awesome.  And I’m sure we saw things that we didn’t need to see.  I wish I could drink to forget some of it.  :)

Gender Blender is an experience, with some Ultimate being played as well.  BFC got off to a slightly shaky start on Saturday, not really having adjusted to the wind.  After going point for point with our first opponent to 4-4, BFC got into the swing of things and scored another 34 points straight.  We were hungry and got two bagels.  Yummy.  We ended the day on a high note finishing 4-0 setting the bar high for Sunday.

After a night of pouring rain, we started out strong in our quarter final, but could not finish with the same efficency that we had on Saturday, losing on Universe Point against MUPH.  With our spirits dampened (pun intended), we looked to a long drive home.  But, with opponents to play, we finished strong against our next opponent, Top Gunned, dominating play at points, and forcing our opponents into long fought points with the wind, while easily scoring our down wind points.  With victory in hand, we looked to head home, but again, another opponents showed up to our surprise.  With a short game agreed to, we played out the final game against MuD in a hard fought match to another BFC victory.  We ended the weekend 6-1 finishing 5th out of 40 teams.

BFC partied hard and played hard for a wonderful finish to this incredible tournament.  Much thanks to the volunteers who helped make GB such a success.
